My life seems to go in 10 year Cycles. I'm sitting here, drunk, with an urge to chronicle. I intended to start this stuff after getting struck by lightening, or after moving house, or after any of the punctuations that have peppered this past year. It turns out all I was waiting for was the end credits of my latest film. I cant help but see these portions of my life in film format. People reading this should be aware I'm seriously dyslexic and a lazy speller anyway, so your going to see some bad spelling and grammar.
0-7 years old, I picture this time in a kind of montage, the time line is hazy. Obviously this is mostly flashback. This film deals with human relationships and how a child effects the way people think and relate to one another and how they in turn shape the child. It begins with a rather mundane hospital scene where we see a dangerously premature baby struggle for life within an incubator. Memorable moments in the main body cover my father adopting me, Me burning down some property, and ends with the Birth of my sister. Soundtrack - heavy use of Pinkfloyd
7-17, An Awkward film unsure of its message. I see this film getting slated by the critics due to its over use of sentimentality and cliché. We get to see me discovering the joy of reading and escapism as a way to deal with bullying. The first time I have to deal with the human condition - mortality. The re invention of myself in college and my first love destroy me utterly. We also get to watch me treat the first un related person to love me, with callous disregard. Soundtrack - Boomtown rats, madness, Jam, beachboys, blues brothers, All about eve, 10 cc (the im not in love scene is great) and one memorable scene with the football fight music from flash Gordon. There should be some Heart in this list too, but it wouldn't make it into the final cut.
17-27, Ahh the good stuff. What we have here is a Rockumentory. Discovering Booze, Girls, Glam Metal, drugs, more booze, clubbing, roadieing, even more booze and spurious travel. A pretentious film taking delight in an ultimately self destructive lifestyle. covering such themes as alcoholism, one night stands, club social dynamics, self delusion and true friendship. An otherwise self-indulgent biopic saved by the background plot lines. Soundtrack - Hanoi Rocks, Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, Martha and the muffins, Velvet Underground, Jefferson Aeroplane, Dead can dance, lords of the new church, Bauhouse, This mortal coil.
27-37, A plodding and methodical film, more focused on getting its message across than entertaining anyone. The central themes of re-evaluation and re-invention tend to be over shadowed by the main characters inability to accept love and self destructive tendencies. The supporting cast are phenomenal, carrying a film where the central actor refuses to engage with the audience. This film only really picks up after the main character has a brush with death in the form of a lightening bolt. A truly random event that remains unconvincing to the viewer. It does, however, serve to jolt the story into gear. Unfortunately this event arrives to late to save the film. Soundtrack - Nine inch nails, Alice cooper, David Lee Roth, Peter Gabriel, Simon Boswell, Sergei Prokofiev, Blue man group.
37+, Im expecting car chases, explosions, zombies, dangerous women and exotic locations. Its a work in progress...
